An online course with Kim Sawyer

A Starting Guide to Buddha Dharma, the Laws of Awakening

An online course with Kim Sawyer

Starting Tuesday March 5 th at 8:00 PM until April 23 rd.

In this 8-week series, Kim Sawyer will describe the early history of the Buddha, and the Setting in Motion the Wheel of the Dhamma, which were the initial teachings taught by the Buddha following the Enlightenment. This includes the Four Noble Truths and the Eight-fold Noble Path. The course content will progress from there, and the Four Foundations of Mindfulness will be the meditational backbone.

Classes will present theoretical material that is intended for further contemplation following the classes.

The intention is to give the attendees a grounding in the basics of Buddha Dharma to provide context for meditation and the spiritual path.

It will be more beneficial for the participant to attend all classes starting from the beginning of the series, but it is understood that some classes may be missed due to peoples’ busy schedules.

These classes will be given over Zoom. Those interested should send an email to Kim at ksawyer@assyst.ca and she will send you the Zoom link.

Kim Sawyer has been studying and practicing Budhha Dharma for over 47 years and has done extensive retreat work on mindfulness, insight and tantric practices. Her primary teacher was Venerable Namgyal Rinpoche, but she has also received teaching from Karma Thinley Rinpoche, His Holiness Karmapa XVI and XVII, Venerable Zasep Rinpoche, His Emminence Ayang Rinpoche, Venerable Khenpo Sonam Rinpoche, Tarchin Hearn, and other international teachers.

What is Dana? Teachers give the teachings of awakening (Dharma) freely so that anyone, no matter their financial means can attend classes. Each time one receives teachings, it is an opportunity to consciously practice generosity. Giving money and other means of support expresses gratitude and support to the teacher and helps to ensure that these teachings continue. Each person receiving Dharma teachings determines the kind and amount of Dāna according to one’s heart and one’s financial means. When deciding how much to offer, one should think about what these teachings mean to you and try to give accordingly. It is recommended that students make an offering of dāna at the beginning of a class or retreat to establish the intention to make the most of this opportunity for one’s own progression and for the benefit of all others.

Using Zoom for Video Conference Classes: If you are joining a video conference class via Zoom we recommend that you sign into the meeting a few minutes prior to starting time. During the talk, you may be asked to switch off your audio and/or video in order to optimise sound and picture quality for all participants.
